Miscellany II: Cancelled All-Stars and Shadow Lady

This page is about cancelled projects, unused data and music releases.

Capcom Fighting All-Stars

Capcom Fighting All-Stars: Code Holder was a 3D fighting game planned for arcades and the PlayStation 2 in 2003. After negative feedback from a limited test in Japanese arcades it spent more months in development and was then cancelled. The idea of flagship Capcom characters battling each other came back with Capcom Fighting Evolution in 2004.

Nine established characters were proposed: Ryu, Chun-Li, Alex and Charlie from Street Fighter, Haggar and Poison from Final Fight, and Batsu and Akira from Rival Schools, plus Strider Hiryu, the only one without a Street Fighter tie. Four new fighters were also planned: D.D., Rook, Ingrid and Death. Ingrid’s design and moves were reused in Capcom Fighting Evolution and she became part of Street Fighter canon, despite seeming out of place, in Alpha 3 MAX. Poison, who had been playable in Final Fight Revenge (1999), returned as a playable fighter in Street Fighter x Tekken (2012).

A club remix record

In 1994 Living Beat Records released a remixed Street Fighter II 12-inch record intended for nightclubs (LBET 027), with two tracks on side A and four on side B. Its World Warrior subtitle sits oddly with cover art from the home Turbo editions and track names such as “Hyper Fighting Club Mix” and “Turbo Club Breakdown”. The music also came out on CD (LBECD 027) and, more rarely, on cassette (LBEMC 027). A two-track 7-inch single (LBES 027) exists too.

Unused Super Turbo names

Two unused subtitles for Super Turbo remain in the arcade ROM. The international version was going to be called The Ultimate Championship, in line with the tradition begun by World Warrior. The idea appeared in early promotional material and on a prototype cabinet, so the decision to drop it was made late. It is still partly recognised, for instance on the logo in the Street Fighter Eternal compendium.

The data also holds a stylised letter Z meant to wrap around the “II” in the logo. It was unused, but it parallels the X that does appear on the Japanese release, Super Street Fighter II X: Grand Master Challenge, whereas the simpler Super Street Fighter II Turbo was chosen abroad.

The scientist with a camera

A scientist in a hazmat suit visible in the background of Seth’s Secret Laboratory stage in Street Fighter IV also appears photographing the Break Car bonus stage in Super IV. Natsuki Shiozawa confirmed in the game’s development blog that this S.I.N. employee and the man with a camera in shorts in Crowded Downtown are the same person. During the Seth fight, one of these scientists drops to his knees when a fighter is defeated.

Shadow Lady

Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter (1997) brought “what-if” characters (Cyber-Akuma, Mech-Zangief, Sunburnt Sakura and Shadow), and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (1998) added a dark Chun-Li. Like Shadow, the brainwashed Charlie, she is known as Shadow Lady and has been turned by M. Bison into a cyborg with a drill arm and rockets. She has a maroon alternate colour scheme, and in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Chun-Li has a costume that imitates it, without the drill attacks. Despite being very niche, she received a card in SNK Vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS (2006).

Sounds Gill never makes

Gill cannot be played in New Generation, so the announcer line “Gill Wins” in the ROM is not normally heard. Using a hack to select him in versus mode makes it play. The sound test also includes a “Jingle Bells” tune (number 20) heard nowhere in play. Sean’s stage is a Christmas-themed New York City, so the track may have been meant for it.

Namco x Capcom

Namco x Capcom (2005) is a hybrid action and tactical RPG for the PlayStation 2, developed by Monolith Soft with characters from both publishers. It revolves around an original cast, with established characters in supporting parts, much like the early-1990s Adventure Quiz and Capcom World titles. The roster is too large to list. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Cammy, M. Bison, Akuma, Sakura, Rose, Juli, Juni, Karin, Haggar and Guy all have notable appearances, along with Hideo and Kyoko from Rival Schools and the four heroes of Captain Commando. Namco and Capcom later joined forces again for the Street Fighter and Tekken crossovers.
