Reading the list

With well over a hundred releases, from the benchmark World Warrior to games with only a thin link, the chart shows how far the Street Fighter name has stretched and how tangled its history is. It does not even cover every console port, nor the films, books, comics and merchandise, which would fill a much larger work.

The name has certainly been used opportunistically at times, but there are gems. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a good example: a light and addictive puzzle game whose charm comes from poking fun at the franchise instead of just cashing in on it.

The core could be narrowed to five games: Street Fighter, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Ultra Street Fighter IV. It would still be a mistake to dismiss the rest. Constant revisions are a common complaint and make the history harder to chart, yet the small tweaks, extra characters and changed dialogue give each version nuance and add up to a history shaped by a search for the definitive edition. The close links with the series also lead many players to discover Final Fight, Rival Schools, Cannon Spike and the better crossovers. Perhaps for every Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, players must put up with a couple of Mouse Generations.
