Unconfirmed Street Fighter Rumours and Open Questions

While compiling the Miscellany, its author kept running into claims that could not be confirmed. This page records them as open questions. Anything later settled is to be struck through with credit to whoever solved it, and eventually moved into the main volumes. Entries stay up as a record either way.

Chun-Li in a manga

Several sources claim Chun-Li has a cameo in You Hyun’s manga Faeries’ Landing, but none says in which chapter or what the scene is. Pages of the comic, which is available online, have been checked in the hundreds and probably thousands without finding her.

Chun-Li in Jackie Chan Adventures

The same websites say Chun-Li shows up in an episode of the children’s cartoon Jackie Chan Adventures, which began around 2000, ran five seasons and drew on Chan’s life and films. It sounds plausible, but with ninety-five episodes the exact one cannot be located without watching them all.

Alternate stages in Street Fighter IV

The challenge modes of Street Fighter IV hint at alternate backdrops, reached by pressing the left and right bumpers at stage select. A few are easy to see: a shop in Crowded Downtown has a red sign rather than a green one, suggesting new owners, and the Overpass stage gets a bunny graffito under the bridge. The differences in the other stages are harder to pin down.

Hard Gay in Capcom Fighting Evolution

Forums and wikis occasionally mention a sprite in Ingrid’s Capcom Fighting Evolution data that shows a man in leather who strongly resembles the comedian Masaki Sumitani’s character. Sources are scarce and the sprite sheet could not be found, so it was originally left out. Solved: this has since been confirmed and is covered in Volume III, page 1.

Belger’s first name

Final Fight’s last boss is called Belger and has apparently never been given an official first name. Even so, “Horace” appears on many character profiles. His brother, Father Bella, features in Final Fight: Streetwise (2006), and some say that game is where the name began, but the Streetwise dialogue shows no such reference. A Capcom source would settle it.

A Korean live-action series

Articles describe a live-action Street Fighter show broadcast in Korea, and clips can be found on video sites. Solid details about production are lacking, including whether Capcom licensed it or it simply ignored copyright, and there is even disagreement over whether it was a series or a film.

Ginzu and the Bushin-ryu

Final Fight and Captain Commando both take place in Metro City. Another link, which turns up without a source, says that Ginzu the Ninja (Sho in Japan) is successor to the style of ninjutsu that Guy practises, some decades later. Ginzu’s in-game profile only calls him a master of ninjutsu. Perhaps the Super Nintendo manual has the answer. Solved: this is also now covered in Volume III, page 1.
